The cost of these electronic health records systems is a major barrier for physician practices, especially smaller ones serving the more rural parts of the state. The recently released Vermont Health Information Technology Plan estimates that the cost of acquiring such a system is $32,000 per physician, with another $10,000 per year in maintenance, support and other costs.
