 EMR Study
Topic 1: Mesothelioma
» Electronic Medical Records offer the user a variety of significant benefits. In the sample report presented below, the patient used a computer kiosk in the waiting room to fill out most of the historical data, including the patient’s past history, the family history, the occupational history and the current medications. Additional details were added by the physician after the patient was seen in consultation.
All laboratory results and diagnostic studies automatically entered the EMR since the laboratory and the diagnostic facilities are connected to the physician’s EMR.
Operative reports and pathology results automatically enter the patient’s medical record, since the hospital is connected to the physician’s EMR.
The EMR automatically checks the medical record for any possible medication allergies or cross-reactivity. Patient prescriptions are automatically faxed to the patient’s pharmacy, reducing errors due to illegible writing, and transcription errors.
All authorized persons, including the patient, other treating physicians, the patient’s attorney, etc. have access to the patient’s record through secure connections via the internet
A sample medical record, representing the initial consultation and follow-up visits of a hypothetical patient, has been created to demonstrate the power of the EMR.
