Review: Dragon Naturally Speaking
05.19.2011 · Posted in Software
The rate of speech is roughly 120words per minute, or three times faster than the average keyboarding speed of 40WPM. Voice recognition software, Dragon Naturally Speaking, by Nuance Communications, will transform your verbal communication into content so it is like having an 120WPM typist, who is also highly precise, at your disposal.
Freelance writers who are paid on a per article basis, can greatly increase their hourly wage by using speech recognition software such as this. Those who type very slow or have unreadable handwriting will also benefit greatly. Others can take advantage of output gains by dictating emails and business documents. Another group of people that benefit are those that are suffering repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel.
When the first speech to text software came out in the 1990′s, each word had to be surrounded by a pause so that the dictation could be accurate. This is no longer necessary. Past versions of Dragon Naturally Speaking took longer to load and made the computer slow. Dragon Naturally Speaking 11 is a quantum leap from previous versions and does not have those limitations. Older versions would get triggered by breath or white noise. Version 11 does not print words out of surrounding distractions.
Installation
The installation of Dragon Naturally Speaking involves a few steps. Once the files have been copied and registered into your system, the microphone needs to be calibrated and a few audio tests are required. Regarding the microphone, it is recommended that the one by Nuance is used for compatibility reasons. Although Bluetooth headsets work very well with this software, they are also very pricey. A wire headset will work just as well and for a lower cost. In order to use a wireless headset, an upgrade to the Preferred version of the software is necessary.
Training
The next step, after installation, is to proceed through the tutorials. The best way is to pick an easier reading. You can always refer back to General Training for a more difficult reading, if you have to. Speak with a normal voice in order to get the best results. It is best not to speak with a different voice or over-enunciate because this might confuse the speech to text engine. Just use normal speech.
Use
Now, it is time to dictate some text. Initially, the program will make a few errors. Avoid correcting incorrect words manually. Instead, use the Select That command to let the software know what the correct word is. By not doing this step, the software does not improve its ability to comprehend.
With any luck, a transcription of 800 words will have no more than five to ten errors, which is comparable to the average number of typos when using the keyboard. Even if users spend the same amount of time correcting dictation typos, they have saved a lot of time due to the speed of the software.
Dragon Naturally Speaking is compatible with Windows XP and all future Windows platforms. You can use it to dictate into Microsoft Office products like Word and Excel. It also handles other popular software products such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, AOL, and Corel WordPerfect.
Cost
Although the price of the basic version is $99.99, other Internet retailers sell Dragon Naturally Speaking for less. The Preferred version offers several features such as support for wireless microphone. If you work in the legal or medical field, there are specialized versions of Dragon Naturally Speaking with extended glossaries appropriate for these fields.
Last word
The better Dragon Naturally Speaking knows your voice, the more accurate it becomes. For freelance writers, their hourly rate increase as the program gets better at recognizing their speech. It is unrealistic to expect a speak to text software to become error free. What is certain is that it will boost your productivity by a factor of three.
