Eclipsys Clinical System Activated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton
Monday March 21, 7:31 am ET
- 1,500 Clinicians Using Sunrise Clinical Manager to Improve Patient Care, Achieve Compliance -
BOCA RATON, Fla., March 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Eclipsys Corporation® (Nasdaq: ECLP - News), The Outcomes Company®, today announced that Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton (RWJUHH), located in Hamilton, New Jersey, has activated Sunrise Clinical Manager 3.5 XA. The system, which is remote hosted at the Eclipsys Technology Solutions Center in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, will be used by over 1,500 clinicians representing over 30 medical specialties.
Sunrise Clinical Manager is an advanced, enterprise-wide clinical information solution that provides healthcare organizations such as RWJUHH with anywhere, anytime secure access to patients' complete health records and streamlines the processes of ordering, providing and managing patient care. Clinicians can remotely access critical patient health information as easily as if they were at the patient's bedside in the hospital. Clinical Manager supports industry standards promoting connectivity of information systems and healthcare organizations.
RWJUHH activated the Eclipsys advanced clinical information system in December 2004 in a single-phase implementation that connected clinicians to information and knowledge to enhance clinical decision making. To help optimize patient care, patient data from the last three years -- representing 800,000 patient visits and 1.5 million lab results -- was ported to Sunrise Clinical Manager from the hospital's existing systems, providing clinicians with a wealth of historical patient information. The hospital is currently utilizing Sunrise Clinical Manager for its patient lists, nursing task lists, charges, orders and results features.
Led by the Eclipsys and RWJUHH project managers, a team of Eclipsys implementation/integration professional services consultants and the hospital's information technology staff and clinicians participated in a collaborative effort to ensure the system would meet the needs of physicians, nurses and other clinicians across the continuum of care. To maximize acceptance of the system, clinicians were trained in a formal classroom setting. All clinicians were required to pass a competency exam in order to receive system access. Additionally, as the system went live, Eclipsys provided three professional services consultants on-site who, combined with the hospital's super users, were available to answer questions and demonstrate the most effective way to access information.
"Clinicians are responding well to the system," said Robert Irwin, chief information officer of the Robert Wood Johnson Health System. "Use of Clinical Manager will greatly benefit patients while helping us to achieve Leapfrog compliance." Among The Leapfrog Group's requirements for quality and safety is use of computerized physician order entry (CPOE). This has been shown to reduce serious prescribing errors in hospitals by more than 50 percent, according to information posted on the patient safety advocacy group's Web site (http://www.leapfroggroup.org ).
House-wide activation of Sunrise Clinical Manager comes on the heels of another significant milestone for RWJUHH. The medical center is the first hospital in the state of New Jersey and the sole healthcare recipient of the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for 2004. The organization joins a group of only three other healthcare organizations to have ever received the award. The Baldrige Award is the top honor a U.S. organization can receive for quality management and quality achievement.
"To be eligible for this prestigious award, RWJUHH established evidence- based criteria for enhanced business performance across all facets of the organization," said Christy Stephenson, president and CEO at RWJUHH. "Doing so has created a heightened focus on our staff, our leadership and, most importantly, our customers. We consider the Eclipsys tools an important part of our continued commitment to process improvement and performance excellence."
"We're honored to be associated with Robert Wood Johnson Health System and Network, which shares our vision and commitment to safe, efficient and effective care," said Paul L. Ruflin, president and CEO of Eclipsys. "With the activation of Sunrise Clinical Manager, the health system has in place a valuable tool which it can use to more efficiently and accurately document the care process, improve communication between clinicians, maximize patient safety and ensure quality at every turn."
Next, the hospital will implement Sunrise Clinical Manager's clinical documentation capabilities, which include care plans, flowsheets, assessments, structured notes, and templates that provide best-practice methods for healthcare organizations to automate and standardize care across a unit, hospital or health system. Clinical documentation is an important facet of the Eclipsys vision of a connected enterprise where knowledge and information flow quickly and easily among caregivers for maximum efficiency. Additionally, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick plans to activate Sunrise Clinical Manager 4.0 XA in November 2005.

POH Medical Center Goes Live with Misys CPR System; One Thousand Healthcare Professionals Are Using Misys CPR to Improve Care Delivery Following 13-Month Rapid Implementation
RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 2005--Misys Healthcare Systems, a leader in healthcare information technology, announced today its Misys CPR enterprise-wide integrated computer-based patient record is live and in use at POH Medical Center, a premier osteopathic teaching hospital, in Pontiac, Mich.
Approximately 1,000 POH Medical Center employees and associates-physicians, residents, medical students, nurses, student nurses, clinicians, IT analysts and clinical and non-clinical support staff-are using Misys CPR across the facility including nine inpatient units and two Emergency Departments at the 328-licensed bed hospital.
During this first phased rollout over 13 months, the healthcare professionals are accessing Misys CPR to electronically communicate and coordinate care throughout the patient's visit, starting with scheduling, registration, clinical care through discharge.
"Working with Misys Healthcare Systems to implement the Misys CPR system hospital-wide was a gratifying experience," said Bruce Kelly, C.P.H.I.M.S., chief information officer, POH Medical Center. "This was one of the best and smoothest system implementations in my 15-year hospital IT career.
"POH Medical Center sought a swift deployment in order to replace our clinical system no longer being serviced," he continued. "From the initial project kickoff to go live, this 13-month rollout reinforced Misys' commitment to a rapid implementation that was in our contract and a prerequisite for success."
According to Kelly, widespread compliance and buy-in from executive hospital leadership and clinical staff were among many reasons behind the successful outcome activating Misys CPR. "The clinical staff was involved from the onset in the selection of Misys CPR and Misys as vendor of choice as well as the creation of new system patient-centric workflows," said Kelly. "Executive hospital leadership's exceptional support led the many clinical and IT decisions necessary for staffing and goal orientation."
Prior to the system go live, Misys and POH Medical Center analysts performed extensive functional and integrated system testing including 'mini-mock go lives' to confirm Misys CPR met hospital requirements. The hospital staff completed a six-week system training program using a specially designed database.
"The 'mini-mock go lives' assured department managers that changes to their workflows were intact, building confidence among their staff," said Kelly. "These preparations established a high degree of confidence among top management for the actual go-live event."
Steven B. Calkin, D.O., F.A.C.O.I., vice president for medical affairs, POH Medical Center, said, "I agree with Bruce's assessment as executive champion for this sizeable system project implementation. While one can never be 100 percent confident in managing expectations of a system launch of this scale, the Misys approach worked flawlessly, reinforcing our decision that selecting Misys CPR was the correct one."
"I'm still waiting for someone to pinch me," said Patrick Lamberti, president and chief executive officer, POH Medical Center. "I have never experienced a system implementation operate as smoothly as the Misys CPR product. We endured no major problems at all. Sure, a few problems were caught along the way, but our support team - including Misys representatives - resolved them quickly. I am more than pleased that POH Medical Center chose Misys CPR. We look forward to the solution's care, safety and workflow benefits expected to advance our hospital operations."
POH Medical Center chose Misys CPR to achieve their goal of a paperless environment by automating all patient care documentation into a single electronic record. The solution will eliminate workflow redundancies in clinical and business office processes, streamline nursing documentation, and improve multidisciplinary communications.
The community-based teaching facility's next implementation phase entails expanding Misys CPR to perform computerized physician order entry (CPOE), enhanced nursing documentation and clinical pathways. The facility plans to deploy Misys Data Warehouse, a powerful online data warehouse application that extracts clinical data from Misys CPR to provide outcomes measurement tools for critical data analysis.
"The project of implementing a CPR system is a momentous event for any hospital. POH Medical Center's high level of commitment, carefully planned rollout and close partnership with Misys set the stage for a successful go live," said Bob Evola, product director of CPR product line, Misys Healthcare Systems. "POH Medical Center persevered because they kept sight of their goal for a single, unifying system to facilitate the sharing of patient and clinical data enterprise-wide in their quest to continually improve safety and quality of healthcare delivery."

Licensing Agreement Will Facilitate In-Depth Market Analysis of Cancer Treatment
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- IMPAC Medical Systems, Inc., part of the Elekta Group and a leading provider of information technology solutions for oncology care, and The Mattson Jack Group (MJG), a world leader in healthcare consulting services, today announce an expanded licensing agreement that will grant MJG access to IMPAC's oncology-specific electronic medical record (EMR) for point of care data, in addition to data from its National Oncology DataBase (NODB), to be used in MJG's Patient Metrics module of Cancer!MPact.

Bill Mattson, Co-chairman and Co-CEO of the Mattson Jack Group, said, "We are pleased to expand our ongoing relationship with IMPAC. This agreement will facilitate research and analyses on geographical trends. The longitudinal EMR point of care data will be invaluable in providing more timely information on actual treatment practice at the point of care."
"IMPAC and The Mattson Jack Group have a long history of working together. We are pleased to expand our agreement so that retrospective analysis and research into treatment practices and outcomes can be taken to the next level," said Joseph K. Jachinowski, IMPAC president and CEO.
Demonstrations of IMPAC's oncology-specific EMR will be available at IMPAC's booth # 2872 during the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Orlando, Florida, May 14-16, 2005.

Nightingale's innovative technology expected to enhance delivery of
patient care by fully integrating health records
MARKHAM, ON, May 16 /CNW/ - The delivery of patient care at Toronto's
Mount Sinai Hospital (MSH) is expected to be enhanced following today's
announcement of an agreement between the Hospital and Nightingale Informatix
Corporation. MSH will license Nightingale's Enterprise Practice Management and
Electronic Medical Record tools for their Ambulatory Record Management System
(ARMS) project, which is expected to include at least 500 physicians and
residents operating out of 130 ambulatory clinics, a move that will allow
medical professionals to automate their clinics and integrate patients'
clinical information currently collected by the hospital systems.
"We are taking a leadership role in accelerating the adoption of
technology among healthcare providers on an integrated patient centric model,"
said Dr. Lynn Nagle, Senior Vice President, Technology and Knowledge
Management of MSH. "Our clinical and information technology staffs have been
working together on an organization-wide initiative to provide innovative ways
to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the delivery of health care
services to patients across all Ambulatory Care services. This project
represents the foundation for the creation of the integrated Electronic Health
Record (EHR) across the entire MSH organization. It accelerates our plan to
create a central patient repository and a platform to seamlessly connect all
stakeholders providing real-time access to critical information to all care
providers and enabling patients to review their medical records and
communicate with their physicians. Our selection committee undertook a
rigorous due diligence process and selected the Nightingale System as the best
fit for the needs of our clinics."
Dr. Nagle continued: "The organization-wide implementation of an EHR is a
key enabling strategy for the enhancement of care delivery across MSH. The
Nightingale System, delivered over an application service provider (ASP)
platform, will enable physicians to develop best practice and customized
clinical templates and treatment profiles which will allow them to standardize
the clinical data capture in a patient centric model, and provide caregivers
throughout MSH with access to central patient information via a secure
internet connection, anywhere, anytime."
"This major initiative by the premiere teaching hospital in Canada will
set the standard for clinical office automation and the integration of
clinical information in a "patient centric" model," said Sam Chebib, the Chief
Executive Officer of Nightingale. "The ARMS project is validation that our
Enterprise ASP clinical system can be the cornerstone of physician office
automation in a large organization where multi-disciplinary care providers are
sharing and contributing clinical input to a unique patient record."
MSH conducted a formal review process for the ARMS project before
deciding to proceed with the Nightingale System. The Nightingale System is an
ASP solution that is delivered through a secure web-connection and two-factor
authentication capable of managing multiple physical locations in real time.
The Nightingale System will be integrated with the existing systems of MSH to
exchange information for diagnostic imaging, laboratory results, pharmacy,
scheduling and ADT. The Nightingale System will allow MSH to provide an
integrated EHR solution on a central platform, while eliminating the burdens
associated with conventional EHR solutions.

New Software Fosters Efficient Health Information Exchange in Communities to Inform Clinical Practices and Interconnect Clinicians
PORTLAND, Ore., May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Memorial Family Medicine, the family practice clinics of Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, TX, has joined the ranks of those deploying ClinicalMessenger 3.0, the new connectivity software application from Kryptiq Corp. to deliver convenient electronic communication of patient records wherever they are needed, between physicians as well as with patients. With new features and functionality that enhances integration with existing electronic health record (EHR) systems, ClinicalMessenger 3.0 streamlines the flow of communications and simplifies the exchange of health information between multiple organizations in a community in order to deliver reduced costs and improved care.
"A national framework for healthcare connectivity is clearly in the national and federal agenda," commented Malcolm Costello, vice president of marketing at Kryptiq Corp. "Exciting and significant progress has been made in the establishment of regional health information sharing initiatives, but many efforts are slowed by issues of governance surrounding centralized registries and patient identification. ClinicalMessenger addresses this challenge and allows our customers to make measurable and meaningful progress today in connecting their communities."
According to a recent report by the Journal of the American Medical Association, over 50 percent of the information typically missing from a patient's medical record is available from other care organizations in the patient's community. One significant cause for this is that health information is traditionally shared between physicians practicing in separate care facilities by paper or fax, and is often unavailable or incomplete when it is needed, even when those individual practices are using electronic medical records. As a result, there is a breakdown in the coordination of care and patients may endure delays and additional unnecessary care services.
Memorial Family Medicine's three clinics in the Houston area are deploying ClinicalMessenger 3.0 to conduct electronic referrals between physicians and to communicate with patients. A study of a similar deployment of ClinicalMessenger in Portland, Ore., conducted by Providence Health System and The Oregon Clinic, demonstrated that use in electronic referrals saves $10.37 per referral and significantly improved clinician access to pertinent patient information.
"ClinicalMessenger is dramatically changing the way we work together and with our patients," said Dr. David Bauer of Memorial Family Medicine. "I no longer have to leave generic messages asking patients to call me back, or wondering if my patients can remember what I told them. Messages can be sent conveniently, we have an audit trail that confirms receipt and patients have a record that they can refer to repeatedly if needed."
ClinicalMessenger provides a critical connectivity solution for providers using EHR systems and has been adopted by numerous provider organizations participating in leading Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs) including INHS in Washington and IHIE in Indiana. ClinicalMessenger provides incremental technology that augments EHR systems and allows RHIO participants to securely exchange patient information.
About ClinicalMessenger 3.0
New features of ClinicalMessenger 3.0 include:
-- Application context sharing -- Once a clinician has opened a patient's
chart in an EHR system, such as GE Centricity® Physician Office,
ClinicalMessenger automatically sets the user and patient context and
makes documents from that patient's chart available to be selected as
message attachments.
-- Automatic "send to" functionality -- Clinicians can securely send
clinical documents, such as office visit notes, test results, or
consult reports, to any appropriate recipient directly from the
patient's chart eliminating additional steps in the workflow and
ensuring a complete record of sent messages is stored in the EHR.
-- Templated workflows -- New message templates simplify communication
workflows such as electronic referrals between physicians and
doctor/patient messages to make the sending of information convenient
for the entire clinical staff.
-- Capture and send "on the fly" views -- From within the EHR,
longitudinal data can be captured as a flow sheet or graphical view,
converted to a .pdf document and sent securely to another physician in
order to provide a comprehensive view of lab results or other clinical
data over time.
Availability
ClinicalMessenger 3.0 will be generally available this July from Kryptiq as well as from the GE Healthcare National Ambulatory sales force and it's authorized resellers.

Like the NODB, the EMR data is provided from participating IMPAC customers. The new de-identified EMR-derived dataset has the potential for adding a unique and expanded body of information from hundreds of thousands of cancer cases in near real time. When added to data from the more than 2 million NODB cancer registry derived cases, it greatly augments the breadth and depth of the resultant information.

BOCA RATON, FL USA 02/09/2005
- 3,000+ Clinicians Benefiting from Improved Workflow, Documentation and
Connectivity -
BOCA RATON, Fla., May 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Eclipsys Corporation®
(Nasdaq: ECLP), The Outcomes Company®, today announced that Genesys Health
System, a member of Ascension Health, Grand Blanc, MI, has activated Sunrise
Clinical Manager. The advanced clinical software solution was implemented at
the 400-bed Genesys Regional Medical Center at Health Park.
The Eclipsys and Genesys project teams worked together to ensure on-time
activation for order entry, results, clinical documentation, patient lists,
and interfaces to various ancillary applications. The solution first rolled
out as a pilot in two units followed by a house-wide implementation that was
completed within five weeks on April 26, 2005.
"Genesys is a long-time user of Eclipsys Sunrise Critical Care solution,"
said Thad Shegos, Genesys project manager. "By migrating to Sunrise Clinical
Manager on one common XA platform, our clinicians are benefiting from the
many enhanced features and functions in Sunrise Clinical Manager such as
improved clinical documentation workflow. With Sunrise Clinical Manager,
patient data documented in a single flowsheet is automatically pulled into the
documentation process and carried forward to all other pertinent documents.
This is greatly improving clinician workflow and improving care delivery."
In addition, medication flowsheets available on Sunrise Clinical Manager
are helping to support improved nursing documentation and patient safety. "For
example, patients being admitted will bring in their medications, allowing
nurses to document the medications and dosages into the flowsheet. This
information then becomes part of the patient's electronic health record and
reduces the potential for medication errors," noted Shegos.
Physicians at Genesys also have access to Sunrise Clinical Manager and
patient information remotely using Sunrise Remote Access Services XA which
provides clinicians with browser-based access to Sunrise Clinical Manager from
outside of the hospital, supporting results viewing, document viewing, single
order entry and complex pre-configured order entry, patient summary
information, integrated secure health messaging and more.
"Our clinicians are really appreciating the benefits of remote access,"
said Shegos. "The ability to access Sunrise Clinical Manager and view real-
time patient information from any Web browser is exactly what our physicians
need when they are outside of the hospital walls and require immediate access
for clinical decision-making."
"Genesys is one of many prestigious healthcare organizations migrating to
Sunrise Clinical Manager," said Eugene V. Fife, Eclipsys chairman, president
and CEO. "By utilizing the system's superior documentation, workflow,
connectivity and content, Genesys physicians are able to deliver more
efficient, effective and consistent care to their patients."

Wednesday June 1, 8:00 am ET
Joins Growing List of Healthcare Leaders Licensing Secure, Interoperable, Reimbursed Online Communication Service
BOSTON, and EMERYVILLE, Calif., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- RelayHealth Corporation, the nation's premier provider of health plan-reimbursed online doctor-patient communication services, and Tufts-New England Medical Center today announced that Tufts-New England Medical Center Division of General Internal Medicine will license RelayHealth services to securely connect physicians and their established patients online.
Boston-based Tufts-New England Medical Center (Tufts-NEMC), the principal teaching hospital for Tufts University School of Medicine, is one of the country's leading medical institutions.
Starting in June, practitioners in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Tufts-NEMC will be the first of the organization's providers to utilize the secure RelayHealth service to help patients resolve non-urgent health matters online-using the webVisit® consultation service, the eScript® prescribing and renewal service, and other timesaving features.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts will reimburse Tufts-NEMC physicians for qualifying webVisits conducted with its members, as part of an ongoing program announced in 2003. The Boston-based health plan provides coverage to 2.7 million members.
"With more than two centuries of innovation in healthcare, Tufts-NEMC sees RelayHealth as a tremendous opportunity to perpetuate our pioneering tradition," said David Fairchild, M.D., Chief, Division of General Internal Medicine for Tufts-NEMC. "Through RelayHealth, we intend to provide a unique suite of services that will both increase the efficiency with which patient communications are managed, and provide patients with an outstanding level of service."
Through formal academic research, Tufts-NEMC plans to assess the impact of RelayHealth on patient and physician satisfaction, as well as the efficiency and increased quality of healthcare delivery. Recent published research reports that user-physician practices experienced an 18 percent drop in telephone call volume and user-physicians averaged 11 percent more visits per day than colleagues not using the service. (Liederman EM, Lee JC, Baquero VH, et al. Patient-Physician Web Messaging: The Impact of Message Volume and Satisfaction. J Gen Internal Medicine 2005; 20(1)).

MILWAUKEE, WI, June 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Independent Physicians Network, Inc. (IPN), one of the largest managed medical provider networks in the U.S. with over 1,000 member physicians, and MedcomSoft Inc. (TSX - MSF) announced today that they have executed a Master Agreement which provides for a pilot project and the basis on which IPN members outside of the pilot project can acquire MedcomSoft® Record. The goal of the pilot project is to validate to IPN members the superior functionality of MedcomSoft® Record's clinical application and its direct impact on the quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare delivery, while increasing revenues and reducing costs.
The adoption of MedcomSoft® Record, a fully integrated medical office automation suite, will encourage physicians to improve patient care and maintain clinical excellence through the automated use of physician performance measurement sets. The performance measurement sets and reporting tools to be included within MedcomSoft® Record are derived from evidence - based clinical guidelines that have been developed by leading national medical associations and organizations.
The pilot project involves the implementation of MedcomSoft® Record in several clinics by Clinical Transformation Management, LLC (CTM, a value added reseller of MedcomSoft), and the implementation is expected to be completed by the fall of 2005.
IPN and MedcomSoft have also agreed to the terms under which MedcomSoft will provide to IPN its new Clinical Data Repository (MCDR), upon the achievement of certain milestones related to the adoption of MedcomSoft® Record by IPN members. MCDR, which is subject to a provisional patent, will be a new generation of community based clinical data repositories that could revolutionize the way clinical data and Electronic Health Records are aggregated, stored and mined. Through automated and secure web transactions generated by different providers in a community, MCDR will be capable of aggregating, in a completely unmanned fashion, the incremental pieces of a health record as they are generated by providers using MedcomSoft® Record. MCDR will be fully codified with the Medcin® point of care medical terminology, producing an unprecedented level of granularity and interoperability of clinical data. MCDR will allow advanced data mining based on any combination of clinical data entries including symptoms, medical history, examinations, test results, conditions, therapies and outcomes. MedcomSoft believes that MCDR will enable healthcare organizations to track outcomes, disease evolution and population health leading to better prevention, disease management and surveillance. Dr. Sami Aita, the Chairman and CEO of MedcomSoft, stated that "MedcomSoft is pleased to have the opportunity to work with Independent Physicians Network and their member physicians to provide them with a full office automation suite which will become an integral part of the way they practice medicine, and will contribute to the delivery of better care while improving revenues and reducing costs. We are also looking forward to the first installation of MCDR, our revolutionary clinical data repository".
"By implementing MedcomSoft® Record, the physicians of the IPN have taken a significant step toward achieving true, usable interoperability," according to Jamil Adi, President of CTM. "Beyond the potentially incalculable benefits of wide-scale participation among the IPN physicians in the MCDR, the interoperability levels made possible by MedcomSoft® Record will give doctors the peace of mind of knowing that their data, and therefore their practices, are protected. Truly interoperable data is safe data, now and into the future: that is one of the many advantages of capturing and exchanging point of care information in a codified format," Adi said.

University Physicians at Stony Brook Improving Quality of Patient Care and Safety with ePrescription
Tuesday June 14, 8:00 am ET
PatientKeeper Charge Capture Client Expands with ePrescription Application
STONY BROOK, N.Y., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- University Physicians at Stony Brook (UPSB), the coordinating entity for a faculty practice of 500 physicians in Stony Brook, New York, is implementing PatientKeeper ePrescription (Powered by DrFirst) on behalf of its Practices as part of a mobile healthcare initiative to improve quality of care and patient safety. UPSB doctors are already using PatientKeeper Charge Capture to streamline the charge capture and billing processes. Electronic charge capture is a major advance over a paper system in recording the services and procedures the physicians provide to their patients.
ePrescribing has been identified as an IT investment that improves the quality of patient care and reduces medication errors, according to the federal government's healthcare IT coordinator, David J. Brailer, M.D., Ph.D. The ability for a physician to electronically submit a prescription directly to a pharmacy is also endorsed by National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) as a technology that will improve the safety and efficiency of drug prescribing as well as the quality of medication decisions.
The 500 providers of University Physicians practice in 18 separate specialty groups that provide a range of medical services from primary care to the most advanced specialty care for patients of all ages.
"Physicians today have to look at the most efficient ways to practice and using new technology can be an important part of that," said Ellen Dank Cohen, executive director of UPSB. "ePrescription should make prescription writing easier for doctors while reducing chances of error caused by misread written instructions."
Doctors will use the mobile software platform for wireless access to the hospital's patient information system. ePrescription provides physicians with an electronic prescription tool at the point of care, managing the entire prescription process from start to finish. Physicians can enter prescription orders, check patients' medication histories, and review formularies from anywhere, at any time, including in the hospital, in the office, and points in between. ePrescription creates, modifies, saves, prints, and faxes or electronically transfers prescriptions directly and securely to the pharmacy. In addition, the software warns doctors of possible allergic or drug-drug interactions.
Charge Capture automates the billing process that typically relies on individual billing cards. Instead of jotting information on cards, doctors use the system to simply check off customizable diagnosis codes and services right on their handheld devices. An accurate record of services provided is recorded and added to the patient record. Charge Capture provides two layers of rule-checking, ensuring complete, accurate bills; support for both inpatient and outpatient workflows; support for PDAs, tablets, and desktops; browser-based reporting and management tools for the billing staff; and tight integration with existing billing systems.

BURLINGTON, Vermont, August 3 /PRNewswire/ --
- Technology activation marks latest milestone in Canadian provider's use of clinical IT to promote patient safety, clinician efficiency
- First activation of Carecast electronic health records system in Canada
Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) today announced it has successfully completed its upgrade to the IDX® Carecast enterprise clinical system from IDX Systems Corporation (Nasdaq: IDXC) at four of its facilities, marking the first activation of Carecast in Canada. VCH is one of the largest academic health authorities in Canada and a nine-year IDX customer. News of the activation follows the announcement of another international "first" for Carecast: a first activation in the United Kingdom at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on June 20.
VCH will use Carecast's integrated clinical and administrative functionality to improve patient safety, streamline care delivery, and support its ongoing expansion of lifetime electronic medical records. The Carecast upgrade is the latest milestone in IDX's track record of adapting its clinical and administrative IT systems for the Canadian healthcare system.
"For nearly a decade, we've counted on IDX as a trusted partner in our commitment to improving the health of the communities we serve, and enhancing the quality and standardization of care delivery across facilities," said Greg Feltmate, Chief Information Officer. "IDX has consistently shown its commitment to meeting the needs of Canadian clinicians -- and our patients."
VCH previously used Carecast's predecessor, IDX® LastWord®, and has moved to Carecast to support its long-term electronic health record strategy, which will include computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and electronic clinical documentation. In addition, VCH uses the IDX® Imagecast solution to manage radiology and imaging workflow at three of its facilities.
Clinicians at four VCH facilities -- the 358-bed University of British Columbia Hospital, the 820-bed Vancouver General Hospital, the George Pearson Centre and G.F. Rehabilitation Centre -- are now using Carecast to support medication safety with pharmacy decision-support tools They can also share patient information such as laboratory results with other members of the care team and across facilities.
The Carecast go-live also includes patient registration capabilities for both facilities, with an additional registration go-live planned for the 175-bed Richmond Hospital in 2006.
"VCH clinicians are dedicated to providing our patients with the absolute highest quality healthcare," said Dr. David Ostrow, Vice President Medical and Clinical Innovation for VCH and Professor of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. "This activation is a significant step forward in reaching our goals for patient safety, and establishes a strong foundation for our upcoming computerized physician order entry and online clinical documentation initiatives -- critical tools for physicians, nurses and every member of the care team."
During 2006 -- 2007, VCH plans to roll out computerized physician order entry, which will make the health authority one of the first Canadian providers to adopt the integrated technology. CPOE allows physicians to enter orders for medications, laboratory tests and other procedures electronically, reducing the risks inherent in illegible handwriting and providing clinicians with alerts about possible drug interactions, patient allergies, and overall best courses of treatment.
Carecast's clinical documentation capabilities will integrate medication charting, nursing assessments and vital signs online, and will enable VCH clinicians to thoroughly document each patient's condition, track the progress of their health and plan treatment. Electronic clinical documentation also has been shown to reduce the amount of time nurses spend on administrative functions, enabling them to reallocate time to patient care instead of paperwork.
In addition to Carecast clinical functionality, VCH is in the process of rolling out Carecast Patient Accounting software at five of its facilities. By integrating clinical, administrative and financial functions, Carecast will allow VCH to automatically generate charges from clinical activities, capture comprehensive billing information, enhance analysis and reporting and minimize lost data -- helping staff and clinicians to save time.
"VCH is a superb example of a provider that leverages integrated technology to improve quality, productivity and efficiency across the spectrum," said Mike Raymer, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Carecast Operating Unit. "We are enthusiastic about continuing to support VCH's initiatives, and committed to meeting the needs of Canadian providers -- and patients."

University Medical Center Tucson, AZ Selects SeeBeyond to Integrate Hospital Patient Care and Financial Systems
MONROVIA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 17, 2005--SeeBeyond (Nasdaq:SBYN), provider of the world's first fully integrated composite application network suite (SeeBeyond ICAN Suite) for the deployment of advanced integration and composite application solutions, today announced selection by University Medical Center Tucson, AZ (UMC), a leader in the Southwestern U.S. for health, wellness, and caring and a U.S. News and World Report "Best Hospital" in 10 categories.
Recognizing the importance of a leading-edge IT strategy in the delivery of quality patient care, UMC initiated an effort to standardize on a single integration platform for its many discrete patient care and financial systems, and to eliminate one of the two outdated interface engines in the Medical Center. Through the deployment of the SeeBeyond ICAN Suite, UMC expects to gain efficiencies through the use of a fully supported, standards-based integration suite, while preserving its existing interfaces until the upgrade is complete. UMC also expects to gain a more predictable cost structure for future development -- something not available with the current interfaces, as well as the opportunity to leverage the market availability of Java developers.
"The SeeBeyond implementation and interface migration project drives both initial and long term value for the UMC medical facility and enhances our ability to provide consistent and high quality patient care," said Kevin Burns, CFO of UMC. "By enabling an immediate ability to seamlessly connect existing hospital patient care and financial systems, as well as develop a flexible, scalable, open platform foundation for future initiatives, including future efforts to provide a unified view of patient information to our practitioners at the point of patient care, the SeeBeyond implementation will deliver long-term strategic value for UMC, our practitioners and patients."
The implementation also provides UMC with the ability to enable electronic medical records consistent with federal initiatives to support a National Health Information Network of interoperable systems for healthcare delivery. The ultimate goal of this effort is to provide improved healthcare through unified single patient views, longitudinal patient medical records and the electronic prescribing of medication.
"This is a very exciting time in the healthcare industry, driven by the goal of a nationwide medical record infrastructure and the need for readiness on the part of individual medical facilities," said Wayne Owens, general manager of Healthcare for SeeBeyond. "Achieving the goals set forth in regional and national programs requires today's healthcare organizations to undertake true clinical transformations. To be cost-effective, these efforts must be supported by the ability to leverage investments in existing legacy IT systems. SeeBeyond offers complete interoperability through our composite application solution suite to make this goal a reality."

Comprehensive Project Also Targets Improvements in Business Operations and Use of Resources
ATLANTA, GA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 08/23/2005 -- Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, Ala., recently announced that it has selected McKesson to implement a broad range of information technology solutions designed to help enhance clinical quality and medication safety, automate clinical departments and improve business operations. The 379-bed healthcare facility, one of the largest in Alabama, will deploy McKesson's Horizon Clinicals® suite along with the company's revenue cycle and resource management solutions. McKesson will also provide a wide range of professional services to help Jackson derive the full benefit of its solutions as well as IT outsourcing support to develop and implement a strategic IT plan.
"To deliver superior levels of safe and effective care, we are investing in state-of-the-art technologies that will enhance our clinicians' ability to practice medicine," said Don Henderson, chief executive officer of Jackson Hospital. "Working with McKesson, we can provide our community with the best possible array of medical services using the most advanced clinical tools."
Once the solutions are implemented, physicians will use a secure, Web-based portal to view patients' clinical data rather than manually retrieving and consulting paper records. With instant access to essential information such as vital signs, diagnostic images and laboratory results, physicians can make more informed decisions and accelerate time to treatment. Nurses and other members of the care team will be able to document patient care electronically, enabling information to be readily available to all who need it.
Nurses at Jackson Hospital will also adopt McKesson's industry-leading Horizon Admin-Rx™ for scanning bar codes on unit-dose, patient medications at the bedside. The solution, which is integrated with the patient's electronic chart, helps to ensure the "five rights" of medication safety -- right patient, right drug, right dose, right time and right route. Nationally, McKesson's bar-code scanning solutions help prevent an estimated 56,000 medication errors while issuing more than 400,000 alerts to hospital staff each week. The hospital will join the five to 10 percent of healthcare facilities nationwide that use bar-coding scanning to accurately track and record patient medications.
Jackson Hospital will also deploy McKesson's picture archiving and communications system (PACS) for medical images. The PACS digitally acquires, distributes and archives diagnostics images and reports. It works in conjunction with a document imaging system, which allows physicians to electronically access, review, sign and complete patient charts. The hospital will also improve emergency-room services by adopting a system that documents and automates ER care and processes.
"Immediate access to a patient's medical history will reduce the need to search for information on paper, which will free us to focus on delivering care and improving outcomes," said. Randy Cook, M.D., a surgeon at Jackson Hospital. "As a result, we will be able to make more informed and collaborative evaluations that will lead to more effective decisions and safer levels of care."
To expedite and improve administrative and revenue cycle functions, Jackson Hospital will deploy McKesson's STAR hospital information system. This will enable the healthcare facility to automate patient registration, charge capture, billing, and other financial and administrative functions, as well as better manage insurance claims and patient accounting. The hospital will also implement McKesson's resource management suite to improve supply chain efficiency and promote the best use of resources such as surgical suites and other high-cost areas of the hospital.
"We look forward to partnering with Jackson Hospital in a transformational project that we expect to not only improve clinical quality and safety, but also financial performance," said Loren Buysman, McKesson group president, customer operations. "Working side by side, we will deliver a comprehensive healthcare IT system that will result in more efficient operations and an electronic health record to support enhanced care delivery."
